NGO Resource Centre

Build an NGO in stages: choose the right structure, maintain clean governance records, complete applicable tax/NPO registrations, and then expand into Darpan, CSR or foreign-contribution compliance where eligible.

What this area covers

  • Trust, Society and Section 8 formation routes
  • Objects, governance and founding documents
  • Tax/NPO registration and donor-related compliance
  • NGO Darpan and CSR readiness
  • FCRA registration / prior-permission awareness
  • Accounts, audit, ITR and annual records

Documents and information to organise

  • Name and type of entity / proposed entity
  • Identity and address records of founders, trustees, directors, partners or authorised persons as applicable
  • Registered / proposed office address records
  • Constitutional documents such as trust deed, memorandum, articles, rules or LLP agreement as applicable
  • PAN, registration certificates, bank and financial records where the entity already exists

Practical process

  1. Identify whether you are starting a new NGO or regularising an existing one.
  2. Choose the legal structure and state/jurisdiction requirements.
  3. Create consistent founding and governance records.
  4. Apply for PAN/banking and applicable tax/NPO registrations.
  5. Add Darpan, CSR-1, FCRA or other registrations only when the organisation is ready and eligible.
  6. Maintain ongoing financial, activity and statutory records.
For tax-exemption terminology, users still commonly search for 12A/12AB and 80G. The current tax-law framework and forms should be checked at the time of filing, especially during statutory transitions.

There is no single best structure. Trust, Society and Section 8 Company have different governance, state-law and compliance implications.
